Mothers and fathers are turning to babywearing as a way to help their baby be more content and to build a strong bond with their child.
Ring slings, wraps and Asian baby carriers have been around for centuries and are used throughout the world as a practical method of babywearing. However, moms that are new to babywearing may find the traditional carriers difficult and awkward to use. Sometimes, parents may feel that the baby is unsafe and unsupported in the baby carrier. Or, the mother may find that her back is frequently sore when she wears her baby. These are typical problems that can generally be solved with a little guidance from babywearing experts. To become adept at using a baby carrier for as long as the child needs, the parents should watch videos that are specific for that type of carrier, find a local baby wearing support group and search the internet for baby wearing tips and support. Babywearing VideosSeeing a mother use the ring sling or wrap of your choice is extremely valuable for first-time baby wearers. The video, Tummy 2 Tummy [Parenting Revolution, LLC, 2005] is an exceptional video that demonstrates the use of ring slings, pouches, Asian back carriers and carriers made from simple pieces of cloth. The instructors in the video are experienced baby wearers and give demonstrations as well as specific babywearing tips. Those that have been successful babywearers may still find the Tummy 2 Tummy video helpful to learn new babywearing positions. It may also be beneficial to watch the video as a refresher when a new baby enters the family. Babywearing Support GroupsMany towns and cities have babywearing support groups, often through BabyWearing International, a non-profit group that is dedicated to supporting and promoting babywearing. Local groups generally have regular meetings for mothers to meet others who practice babywearing. These meetings are a great place to learn the ins and outs of babywearing, especially if you are having difficulty with your particular sling or wrap. Local groups sometimes have different types of carriers for loan. This enables mothers to try different styles of baby carriers in order to find one that is most comfortable and practical for them. These groups are also a great source for babywearing videos and literature. Babywearing Instruction on the InternetThere are babywearing videos available on-line. Sites that sell baby carriers will often have links demonstrating their carrier. You Tube frequently has babywearing videos. Any on-line community that promotes attachment parenting is a great resource for babywearing parents. For instance, Mothering Magazine’s on-line community has a forum dedicated to babywearing. Parents that are struggling with babywearing can find help. Visual resources, like the Tummy 2 Tummy video, provide babywearing instructions. Local babywearing groups offer instruction and support for babywearers. The internet is a valuable resource for those first learning about babywearing. These many resources will help you on your way to babywearing success.
